The flashing lights from the construction site across the street, combined with the thumping bass from the upstairs apartment, were slowly driving her mad. Evelyn lay in bed, her eyes wide, staring at the ceiling. The sounds had become an inescapable chorus. She felt an unbearable pressure in her chest.

She pulled the covers over her head, trying to muffle the noise, but the sounds still throbbed through her. She squeezed her eyes shut, wishing she could just shut everything out. She felt a profound sense of isolation.

She threw the covers off in an abrupt movement, as if trying to rip away the feeling of oppression. She sat up, her face pale, and swung her legs over the side of the bed. She had a sudden desire to be far away from here.
