Gemotions

The late afternoon light, usually a source of comfort, felt thin and weak as Mr. Abernathy slumped into his chair. Another day of grading papers loomed before him, a task he usually approached with a practiced ease. Today, however, the very thought felt like wading through molasses. He ran a hand through his thinning hair, the familiar motion offering no solace.

A small, brightly wrapped package sat on his desk, utterly out of place amidst the stacks of essays. He hadn't noticed it before. Irritation pricked at him. Probably some well-meaning PTA donation he'd have to feign enthusiasm for.

He picked it up, the paper crinkling loudly in the quiet room. The card was from a former student, Maria Sanchez, a girl he'd always found to be a bright spark. His irritation softened a little. He opened the card. Inside, a handwritten message, brief and simple, thanked him for believing in her. Inside the box, a beautifully crafted ceramic bird, its wings outstretched as if in flight. A tiny smile touched his lips, the first genuine expression of the day.
