The professor’s words, usually a source of inspiration, now felt like an unwelcome intrusion. Maya slouched in her chair, arms crossed tightly. She’d always loved this class. But today, the information felt useless, a burden.

"So, what does everyone think of the news?" the professor asked.

Maya didn't answer. She wouldn't. She stared at the ceiling, at a crack slowly widening in the plaster. It mirrored the cracks that were forming in her own hopes and plans.
