He slammed the door, the sound echoing in the empty house. The silence that followed was even more oppressive. Arthur slumped onto the sofa, the cushions doing little to alleviate the weight pressing down on his chest. His hands were clenched.

Then, the doorbell. He trudged to the door, figuring it was another bill. Instead, a florist’s assistant presented him with a collection of vibrant sunflowers. No note. Arthur scrutinized the flowers, bewildered.

He dragged the sunflowers into the kitchen, dropping them on the counter with a thud. He began clearing up and it wasn’t long before the table was covered in crumbs and empty packets. Why sunflowers? They were so cheerful, and he felt anything but. He scowled at the bright yellow faces staring back at him, feeling a sudden surge of something akin to anger.
