He’d always been a pragmatist, pragmatic to a fault, in fact. That was David, her brother. So, the announcement that he was joining the Church of Scientology struck Martha like a physical blow. She almost choked on her coffee, the bitter liquid burning a path down her throat. Her jaw dropped, and she could only stammer, “Scientology?”

David just smiled, a small, knowing smile that grated on her nerves. The sunlight streaming through the kitchen window seemed suddenly harsh, illuminating every dust mote and imperfection. She gripped the edge of the kitchen table, her knuckles white, as if she might be swept away by this revelation. Everything she thought she knew about him had been rearranged.
