The pounding started just as he was about to get into the shower. He froze, soap halfway to his face. He peered through the blinds, blinking against the bright sunlight. The Thompsons’ house was…different.

His eyebrows shot up. A massive scaffolding encircled the entire structure, and men in hard hats were swarming like ants. He felt a weird, unsettling feeling in his stomach. He'd chatted with Mr. Thompson just last week about the weather. He had said nothing about this. He let out a silent whistle.
