"Impossible," Amelia muttered, her voice thick with disbelief. She reread the notification on her phone, then again, just to be sure. The words swam before her eyes. She felt a jolt of energy, followed by a dizzying sensation in her head. She gripped the edge of the kitchen counter, her knuckles white.

She'd poured her heart and soul into the application. She’d sacrificed sleep, social life, everything. She’d meticulously crafted each essay, edited and re-edited every paragraph. Now? Denied. She felt a knot forming in her stomach.

She walked to the fridge, grabbing a bottle of water, then almost dropping it on the floor. Her hand was shaking. She leaned against the refrigerator, unable to take a drink.
