He hadn't mentioned it to his parents, but he'd lost his job. He’d packed his apartment – his adult life, he thought – into boxes and called his dad. This was a secret he'd planned to keep as long as he could. But the news was out. He stood in the doorway, feeling the weight of the moment. He tried to force a smile as he was met with concerned faces.

The house, once a haven, now felt like a cage. He looked at his father, expecting an angry reprimand. Instead, his father just sighed and looked to the floor. The relief he felt was quickly overshadowed by something heavier. He was not sure he could handle this.

His mother gave him a soft, understanding look. "Come in, honey. Dinner's almost ready." He followed her into the kitchen.
