He stared at the rejection letter. He’d expected it, of course. His application was decent, but Maya’s was outstanding. They'd spent weeks prepping, comparing notes, and offering each other advice. The thought he'd even be considered was laughable. Yet… his name was on the rejection email, too.

He blinked, pulling the letter closer to his face. The official Sterling Corp. letterhead mocked him. He hadn’t felt this…discombobulated since he accidentally dropped his ice cream cone on the first day of fifth grade.

He thought of the phone call. Maya's voice, usually so steady and confident, had cracked when she'd told him about her interview. She'd been her usual professional self, but something was off. Now he knew why. This was insane. He leaned back in his chair, rubbing his forehead.
