Gemotions

The steam from the tea cup clouded Liam's face as he watched Sarah. She'd been perched on the balcony, phone pressed to her ear, for what felt like an age. He'd tried to make out the words, but the wind had snatched them away. Now she was back inside, her smile bright, almost frantic. He knew that smile. The one she deployed when she was hiding something. He cleared his throat. "Everything alright out there?"

Sarah jumped. Her hand flew to her chest. "Oh! Yes, fine. Just... a work call." She busied herself at the counter, humming a tuneless melody, her back to him. He found himself unable to blink. Her usual effortless grace seemed…forced.
