He had found the phone hidden in the glove compartment. Laura’s phone. It wasn’t the discovery that was unsettling. It was the frantic, whispered conversation he’d overheard, the urgency he’d felt. He had to know the password, and he was able to guess it: 1234. He scrolled through the messages, his hand shaking.

Now she was in the shower. He felt his face flush hot, then cold. He wanted to shout, to ask questions. But the words were caught in his throat. He felt like he'd been thrown into an ice bath, his mind racing.
