The weight of the groceries in his arms seemed insignificant compared to the hollowness he now felt. David stopped dead in his tracks, his gaze fixed on the empty space in his driveway. His work van was gone.

He lowered the bags carefully, as if the slightest movement might shatter the fragile reality he was clinging to. His mind struggled to comprehend the visual absence. He felt an intense pressure building behind his eyes.

He began to pace, his steps jerky and uneven. He felt a sudden urge to laugh, a hysterical bubble of sound threatening to escape his lips. He pressed his lips tightly together, trying to suppress the rising tide of…of…*something*. He didn't want to think about what he was going to do.
