He rummaged through the dusty basement, searching for the box of Christmas ornaments. The task had been assigned to him and his siblings. He was looking forward to the task, not expecting the unexpected. Tucked away under an old quilt was a collection of leather-bound albums, their covers embossed with gold lettering. "Mark's School Days," they read.

He thumbed through the pages. Each page held a perfectly preserved assignment, a painstakingly neat essay, a carefully corrected test paper. He stared at a drawing of a lopsided dog that he was sure he had forgotten, his brows furrowed. A feeling of lightness settled over him; a strange, disconnected sensation.
