"Next!" barked Coach Miller, his voice booming across the football field. Jake stood frozen, unable to move his feet. His legs felt like lead weights. He’d anticipated this moment with a certainty bordering on arrogance. He envisioned the cheers, the glory. He pictured himself, a star linebacker. The list of names was finally posted, and Jake’s vision began to shrink. He blinked, expecting it to reappear. Nope, not there. The wind whipped around him, carrying with it the laughter of teammates who had made the cut, and making his cheeks burn.
