“Honey, are you ready?” his wife called from the top of the stairs. He’d spent the day creating this moment, so excited to see the look on her face.

He pulled himself from the couch, putting on his jacket. Reaching the front door, he could hear nothing. Not even a murmur. He glanced out the peephole. Nothing. He opened the door. The house was dark. Completely quiet. A sense of… something he couldn’t name washed over him.

He stepped inside, his steps slow and deliberate. The weight of the world seemed to settle on his shoulders. He felt a profound sense of isolation, alone in his own home.
