The cake, she thought, was the best part of the whole charade. She took the elevator up. She should be greeted with a joyous group of friends and family.

She stepped out and pushed the door open to the rooftop. No one. The tables were bare. The sun was setting, casting long shadows. It was a beautiful view, but she could barely see it. The absence of the party felt like a physical weight, pressing down on her chest. It was… unexpected. She suddenly felt a pressing desire to sit, and not move.
