He’d known, of course, that Amelia was good, maybe even exceptionally so. She was quick, enthusiastic, and seemed to grasp concepts instantly. But when Mark saw the compensation report slipped in amongst the quarterly reviews, he stopped dead in his tracks. His jaw slackened. He had trained her. He’d guided her. And yet, the salary difference was a chasm. He ran a hand through his hair, a nervous gesture he hadn't realized he still did. The air in the room felt suddenly thin, difficult to breathe. He felt a cold prickle at the back of his neck.
