He grabbed the mail, eager to see if his new book had arrived. Nothing. Just the usual assortment of bills and junk. Then, a card. He picked it up, his brow furrowing. He had no memory of ordering a card.

He studied the envelope. No return address. His name and address were written in an unfamiliar hand. He opened it. "Best wishes," it said. Nothing else.

He felt a sudden… chill. He didn't know anyone who would send him something like this. He gripped the card tightly. He scanned the room, his eyes narrowed. He felt a growing sense of... unease.

He walked over to the window, peering out at the street. He felt like he was being watched. He didn't feel safe.
