“Well, I’ll be…” David muttered, staring at the front door. He couldn’t quite believe it. His sister, Sarah, was already bustling about the house, opening windows and letting in fresh air.

Inside, the living room felt both familiar and alien. He sank onto the floral patterned sofa, the springs protesting beneath his weight. This was his grandmother's house, a place of countless childhood memories, a place he hadn’t expected to inherit.

He was suddenly acutely aware of every creak of the floorboards, every tick of the grandfather clock in the hallway. A warmth spread through his chest, followed by a rush of confusion. What did it all mean?

He looked at Sarah, the sunlight illuminating her face, and felt a rush of something akin to panic.
