The last box of Grandma’s belongings was being cleared out. Liam and his sister, Fiona, stood shoulder to shoulder in the living room. The house, usually filled with laughter and the smell of freshly baked cookies, was now eerily silent.

The solicitor’s words echoed in Liam’s ears: *equally divided.* He blinked. It had been his dream, as a child, to inherit the house, but as he grew older, he'd given up on the notion.

He felt a curious disconnect, as if he were an actor who had just forgotten his lines.

Fiona turned to him, her eyes wide. “What do we do now?” she asked, her voice barely audible. He opened his mouth, but no words came out. He felt like he was drowning in the silence.
