Rain lashed against the overflowing bins as Elara, hunched against the biting wind, reached for the errant piece of cardboard. Her fingers brushed something slick and yielding. A wallet. She pulled it free, the weight of it in her hand odd. She peeked inside. Bundles of crisp notes stared back, so much money she felt a sudden, dizzying lightness in her head. Her jaw dropped. She quickly looked around, as if expecting someone to materialize and snatch it away. “Well, I never,” she breathed, the words barely audible over the gale.
