The oversized package arrived with a thud that echoed through the otherwise quiet apartment. David, engrossed in his current novel, nearly jumped out of his chair. He glanced at the return address. It couldn’t be. It was. The high school alumni association. His heart began a frantic rhythm against his ribs.

He ripped open the box, the cardboard tearing with unnecessary force. Inside, nestled amongst tissue paper, was a packet of information and a class directory. He picked up the directory, his fingers trembling slightly. He felt a sudden, urgent need to walk outside, to breathe in the crisp autumn air. The air in his apartment felt heavy, stale, filled with ghosts.
