“Dad, can you get the mail?” Emily called from the hallway. Moments later, her father stumbled into the living room, a bewildered expression on his face. He held a brightly colored envelope. “Looks like you’ve got something…” he trailed off.

She snatched it from him, her hand brushing his. The familiar script on the front was a shock. He hadn’t mentioned it. No one had. She stared at it, her jaw slightly agape, a feeling of vertigo suddenly engulfing her. Her father watched her face with concern, his own expression mirroring her disquiet. She wanted to scream, to run away. Instead, she took a deep breath.
