He pulled up to the curb, staring at the dilapidated structure. Brick dust coated the air, and a heavy machinery sat on the front lawn. The house looked smaller, more vulnerable than he remembered. He felt a knot in his stomach.

She hadn't been back in over a decade. He expected it to be there, unchanged. A haven. A place to return to. Now, the windows were boarded, the paint peeling, the structure clearly compromised.

He slowly opened the car door, his legs heavy. He walked towards the fence, his vision blurred. He couldn’t seem to breathe properly. The machine’s metal teeth glinted in the sunlight. He had a sudden urge to run, to stop it.
