The demolition notice was attached to the front door, a stark white square pasted over the peeling paint. I stared at it, my mouth open. My legs felt like lead. The words blurred before my eyes.

It was almost comical, the audacity of it. After all this time. The house, once a sanctuary, now marked for destruction.

I leaned against the door, my body trembling. I had so many memories there, etched into the walls, the floors, the very air. I ran my hand over the weathered wood, as if trying to physically hold onto something.
