The fluorescent lights of the meeting room buzzed overhead, amplifying the unsettling silence. This was not how Jacob envisioned his senior year. He'd pictured himself leading the team, a role he'd worked his whole life for. The coach's expression was unreadable, a carefully crafted mask.

Jacob felt a strange lightness, as if his feet might lift off the ground. He blinked rapidly, trying to clear his vision. His mouth went dry. He struggled to form a coherent thought, his mind racing to find any possible reason, any explanation for the announcement that was still echoing in his ears.
