The silence in the bleachers was deafening. The sun was setting, casting long shadows across the empty field. This wasn’t what Kevin had planned on. He thought he was playing the best he ever had.

He felt an odd sensation in his head, as if his mind was struggling to catch up. He squeezed his eyes shut for a moment, then opened them again, as if the physical act could somehow change reality. His mouth went dry. He swallowed hard. The coach’s explanation was a blur, a jumble of words he couldn’t seem to process.
