The words hung in the air, thick and heavy. A pet? Maya stared at Liam, her jaw slack. This was the same Liam who swore up and down he was allergic to everything with fur. He even sneezed if a feather duster was used within a five-foot radius of him.

Her eyebrows shot up, nearly disappearing into her hairline. She felt a sudden, odd lightness in her stomach, like she’d just plummeted on a roller coaster. The idea of a fluffy cat, or even worse, a shedding dog, cohabitating in their minimalist apartment was… mind-boggling.

“A…a pet?” she managed to croak out, the syllable sounding strange and unfamiliar in her own ears. Liam’s normally jovial face was now expectant. He looked almost... eager.
