He stared at the blinking call button, a tremor running through his frame. This wasn't happening, was it? He, David, stuck in an elevator with Brenda from accounting? He'd always considered her a bit… well, bland. Now, here they were, the metallic confines magnifying every uncomfortable silence, every awkward shuffle.

“Well,” Brenda chirped, her voice a little too high, “this is… unexpected, isn’t it?” David just nodded, his throat suddenly tight. He ran a hand through his hair, a gesture he hoped didn't betray the rapid fire of thoughts in his head.

He could feel the heat creeping up his neck. He normally loved elevators, but this was different. He shifted his weight, felt a bead of sweat trickle down his temple. The air seemed to be getting thicker, heavier. He found himself desperately hoping he hadn’t eaten anything that might offend.
