Gemotions

The words swam before Maria’s eyes, refusing to make sense. She blinked furiously, but the unwelcome message remained. She lowered the letter, and a small sound escaped her lips.

Her cheeks flushed, then drained of color. The floral wallpaper, usually a source of calm, now seemed to press in on her, its delicate patterns suddenly overwhelming. The bright light streaming in from the window felt harsh and unforgiving.

She felt a strange lightness, as if she might float away. She touched the back of her head, checking to see if she was still in reality. This couldn't be happening.
