"This must be a joke," I muttered to myself, staring at the letter. The postmark was from my hometown, a place I hadn't visited since leaving after the disastrous school play. The return address read, "Michael Davis." He was the one who had spread the rumors, ruined my chance at the lead role, and humiliated me in front of the entire school.

I felt a sudden, sharp ache in my jaw. I reread the envelope, then the apology itself, over and over again. My chest felt constricted. The words flowed over me and they felt… real. I pushed myself from my chair and went to the window, staring out at the rain. I felt a strange heat building in my eyes.
