"Excuse me, sir," a voice said. Thomas spun around, the spatula clattering against the hot pan. He was usually alone in the kitchen, cooking for himself, blasting his music. He glanced at his neighbor, Mr. Jenkins, who had come to the door.

Mr. Jenkins' face was unreadable. "I'm sorry to bother you, but that… music," he said, gesturing vaguely towards the kitchen, "it's… quite loud." Thomas could feel his cheeks flush.

Thomas felt a flush of embarrassment. He normally would have apologized, but he was completely speechless.
