The sterile white of the medical conference hall seemed to amplify the feeling in David's gut. The presentation was droning on about a rare genetic anomaly. He barely registered the presenter's words. He had been diagnosed a year prior. It was isolating, lonely. Then, a question from the audience. A woman with an elegant braid, rose and asked about a specific symptom. David recognized it instantly. He knew, he felt it in his bones.

He followed her as she walked out. She turned as she caught up to him. He found himself unable to speak, the information from the presentation now flooding back. “Did you…?” he managed at last, gesturing toward her. She met his gaze, and a shared understanding, a connection, formed. A small smile spread across her face. "Well, I never."
