The news hit Leo like a physical blow. He froze in the middle of the hallway, the grocery bags slipping from his grip. Tomatoes and lettuce spilled onto the linoleum floor.

He stared at the scattered vegetables, momentarily unseeing. His apartment…his home…was becoming something else. He felt his pulse quicken.

He knelt to pick up the groceries, his hands clumsy and unresponsive. The weight of his apartment, the things it held, suddenly felt unbearable.

His stomach clenched. He couldn’t process this.
