Gemotions

The dust was the worst. It settled on everything, coating the plants in a fine, gray film. I tried to ignore it, but the constant noise, the vibration in the ground, made it impossible. My neighbor, Ms. Chen, had started a major overhaul, and the atmosphere in our street had shifted.

The men working on the property were never idle, their energy unnervingly focused. They worked late into the night, their movements hidden in the shadows. I watched from my bedroom window, a knot forming in my throat.

I found myself holding my breath, straining to hear conversations over the construction sounds. Every shadow, every movement, was amplified in the dim light. I couldn’t shake the feeling that something was being concealed.
