“Unsuccessful.” The word echoed in Chloe's mind. The email was a cold slap in the face. She sat at her kitchen table, staring blankly at the screen. She had checked and double checked everything, her application perfect. Her interview had gone well. Or so she thought.

She stood abruptly, pacing her small living room, the linoleum cold beneath her bare feet. She felt a growing disquiet, a feeling of unease that settled in her stomach. She went to the window, watching the rain streak down the glass, blurring the outside world. She remembered Mr. Davis, the committee head, giving her a particularly piercing look during the interview. Why?
