Rain lashed against the windows of Leo's apartment, mirroring the storm brewing inside him. Professor Davies, his mentor and the only family he had left, was just gone. A terse email, that was all. No phone call, no explanation, just a generic goodbye. He paced the cramped space, each footfall a frustrated beat against the wooden floor.

Leo picked up a framed photograph from his desk. It showed him, younger, beaming, and Davies, his arm around him, a genuine smile on his face. He felt a surge of… something. Unease? Discomfort? He couldn't quite name it.

He checked his phone again, the screen reflecting his own anxious face. Nothing. He dialed Davies' old number, listening to the hollow ring before the voicemail picked up. He hung up, the silence amplified by the relentless drumming of the rain.
