The scent of lavender from the diffuser couldn't calm Eleanor's nerves. Her daughter, Chloe, had been acting... strange. Her demeanor, the way she spoke, the way she dressed, it was all different. A subtle shift, like the earth before a quake.

One night, she decided to wait up. Chloe had told her she was going to a friend's house. But Eleanor's instincts screamed otherwise. She watched from the window as Chloe slipped out, looking more eager.

She grabbed her coat and followed. Down the street, she saw Chloe go into a building. Eleanor found herself, minutes later, standing across the street, peering through the window. Inside, Chloe was sitting at a table, animatedly talking to a group of friends. She was not herself.

Eleanor's breath caught in her throat. She needed to know what was going on.
