“You must be thinking of someone else,” James said, his voice a low monotone, his eyes fixed on the distant horizon. The words were a knife twisting in David’s gut. The memory of their shared secrets, the late-night talks under the stars, felt like a cruel joke. He felt his face flush. He was sure he’d seen a flash of something in his eyes, but it was gone in an instant.

He felt the muscles in his jaw clench, as he stared at James. The gentle breeze that normally would have been soothing, felt like a caress of ice across his skin. He noted the way James kept looking over his shoulder, as though expecting someone else, or running from something. He wanted to shake him, to jar loose some memory, some recognition. But all that remained was the hard, inscrutable set of his features.
