The flickering candlelight cast long shadows across David's face as he examined the photographs. He had promised his aunt he’d sort through her father’s belongings. He had come across a box of pictures that told a different tale.

His uncle, the war hero, was shown in a tuxedo, laughing. He was surrounded by glamorous women. His own father had always downplayed his service, portraying himself as a humble man of the people. This was a man of wealth and connections, a man he didn't recognize.

David ran a hand through his hair. The carefully constructed stories of his childhood seemed fragile. He thought of all the times he’d heard his father tell the same anecdotes. It felt like something important had been lost.
