Everything seemed too perfect. A perfectly arranged buffet, the waitstaff moving with an unnatural smoothness. The smiles plastered on people's faces seemed almost too broad, too practiced. He eyed his father, who was laughing with his boss, a laugh that sounded strained to John's ears.

The carefully curated slideshow felt like propaganda. The montage of his parents’ lives played on a large screen, each picture, each anecdote, painting a picture of flawless contentment. It was a story John didn't quite recognize. The music, a selection of upbeat pop songs, felt oddly inappropriate for a retirement party.

As he walked towards the podium to begin his speech, a coldness spread through his limbs. The room appeared to be closing in, each guest a silent observer. He cleared his throat. It was going to be difficult to pretend that everything was just fine.
