The letter arrived on a Tuesday, nestled amongst the bills and junk mail. David felt a sharp jolt in his chest when he saw the sender's name: Martha. He hadn't spoken to her since their disastrous business venture. He leaned back in his chair, trying to collect himself, the hairs on his arms standing on end.

He read the letter with a slow, deliberate pace. Martha apologized for her part in the financial ruin, admitting her reckless behavior. There was a mention of wanting to make amends, and she included a phone number. David ran a hand through his hair, his fingers tangling.

He stood and walked to the window, staring out at the rain-slicked street. The building across from him seemed to watch him, with blank, unblinking windows. He took a deep breath, trying to steady his nerves. He felt a deep, uncomfortable unease. He turned from the window and went to the desk, not to call, but to lock the letter in his drawer.
