He’d always been a creature of habit. Every morning, the same routine: coffee, the newspaper, a brief check of his phone. She, Emily, had noticed a change lately, a new level of guardedness. He was suddenly always on the phone in secret, and he would never let her see the screen.

Then, today, she found the envelope. The bank statement was tucked away with his other documents. It was a simple account, but it was there, and the amount was considerable. A feeling of lightness vanished into something cold and dark.

She watched him from the kitchen window, as he walked up the driveway. His smile seemed foreign, and she didn't recognize him at all.
