Mr. Johnson felt a strange tightening in his chest. A brand-new, expensive-looking fountain pen arrived on his desk. The inscription read, "To Mr. Johnson, for your guidance." It was from Jason, a student who had constantly challenged his authority, a young man who was always on the edge of getting expelled.

He examined the pen carefully, turning it over in his hands. He tapped it lightly against the desk. He imagined how the ink might flow, how the pen might feel. He went to the window, watching the traffic below. He felt a nagging sensation that this gift was not what it appeared to be.
