The sheer audacity of it left Mark speechless. His younger brother, Ben, who had always been the most rebellious of the bunch, was now embracing Mormonism. Mark shifted uncomfortably in his chair, feeling a knot tighten in his stomach.

He excused himself from the table, claiming he needed to stretch his legs. He wandered into the backyard, kicking a loose stone across the patio. The late afternoon sun cast long shadows, making the world seem unfamiliar.

He thought of his parents, their conservative views, their expectations. This was going to be a trial for everyone, he knew it. He breathed deeply, trying to gather his thoughts, searching for some words of consolation.
