He heard the roar of the saw first. Then came the insistent screech of metal against metal, and the general cacophony that accompanies any construction project. Mark grimaced, rubbing his temples. He’d barely managed to get his toddler down for a nap. The noise was brutal.

The sounds were coming from the house next door, where the Millers were finally starting to remodel their bathroom. He knew the couple; young, enthusiastic, and completely clueless about the realities of home renovation.

Mark closed his eyes, thinking of all the unseen difficulties that lay ahead for them. He pictured their little one, cranky and overtired, and thought of the long, tiring days to come. He decided, when the noise died down for a bit, he would go and offer the use of his own back yard for a small respite for their child, away from the dust.
