Rain lashed against the windows, mirroring the bleakness in David’s heart. He watched, from his living room, as Mrs. Gable struggled with the fence posts. Her dog, a scruffy terrier named Gus, whimpered at her side, clearly wanting the old fence to stay.

David remembered his own father, who had passed away last year. He had always been the one to fix things around the house, and seeing Mrs. Gable battle this chore alone made his chest ache.

He pulled on his rain jacket and went outside. "Need a hand, Mrs. Gable?" he called, his voice barely audible above the storm.
