The familiar squeak of the front gate, the scent of roses in the air, the uneven flagstones leading to the front door – it was all overwhelmingly nostalgic. Chloe stood on the porch, clutching her car keys, a feeling of unease twisting in her gut. She’d been gone for ten years.

Her mother answered the door, her face a mask of carefully controlled emotion. "Chloe! Come in, darling." The words were warm, but Chloe sensed a certain hesitancy behind them.

Inside, the house was immaculate, a testament to her mother's meticulous nature. Chloe’s old bedroom, now a guest room, was just as she remembered it, but somehow smaller. She sat on the edge of the bed, feeling like a stranger in her own past.

Her mother brought her a cup of tea, her hands shaking slightly as she handed it to her. "It's good to have you home," she said, her voice catching. Chloe looked at her, searching for the truth in her eyes, knowing she had to make things right.
