The weight of the rejection letter, the empty bank account, the broken promises, all settled on him as he walked to his childhood home. The house seemed to shrink as he approached, its familiar facade now a symbol of his diminished status. He hated his current state.

He found his mother on the porch swing, watching the sunset. He approached her, his steps hesitant. She looked up, her face softening.

She patted the seat beside her. He sat down, the swing rocking gently. She didn't ask him any questions. She just reached over and took his hand, her grip firm and reassuring. The silence was not awkward, but a shared understanding. He looked at the sunset, feeling the knots in his stomach begin to loosen. He knew he was safe.
