The echoing announcements seemed to amplify the feeling of despair. For Emily, the missed event was a new job interview, which was now impossible to attend. The thought of the missed opportunity felt like a crushing blow.

She rested her head against the cold window, watching the planes sit motionless on the tarmac. She wanted to be able to feel some control.

She looked around the terminal, her gaze landing on a woman who was crying into her hands. Emily understood the woman’s unspoken grief. She, too, wanted to cry.
